NSW went the hard way to take out the John Reid Shield following a 2-1 win over defending champions the ACT in the open men’s national championship final.
NSW were led by an outstanding pitching performance from Harri Peters, with 13 strikeouts, and a phenomenal diving catch by Callum Beashel in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be a game saver. Beashel went on to win both the player of the grand final and the rookie of the year award.
Liam O’Leary hit a triple at the top of the second innings, before getting home through a James Brownlow single to give NSW the lead, before Hayden Mathews’ solo home run gave NSW a 2-0 lead at the top of the fourth inning.
ACT hit back with a run at the bottom of the fifth but Peters held his nerve to shutout the defending champs and return the shield to NSW.
It is NSWs second title in three years but it didn’t seem to be going that way after the early rounds.
NSW lost its first three games before a fourth loss to Queensland in the preliminary rounds to finish third. One run wins were the name of the game in the finals with a 6-5 win over Western Australia and 4-3 win over Queensland before the 2-1 win over the ACT.
After winning the open women’s Gilley’s Shield and under-17’s girls’ Esther Deason Shield and boys’ Arthur Allsopp Shield, it makes it four-from-four for NSW and a cleansweep is still on the card.
