Inclusion Day at Softball NSW

Published Mon 27 Jun 2022

It was a Tuesday to remember for the students and staff from Doonside Technology High School, Chifley College, as well as Softball NSW. Hosted by Softball NSW at Blacktown International Sportspark last week on June 21, this year's Inclusion Day featured close to forty students with disabilities who enjoyed warmup sessions, Tee-ball as well as Slow-pitch softball games, assisted and managed by their respective coaches and school staff.

The event was managed by Sports For All Director Greg Brown, Softball NSW's Donna McGrath and Mohi Rameka, supported well by coaching support provided by Westfield school coaches Chris Brownlow and Ashleigh Viera, as well as Westfield school athletes Shaye Avery-Uitime, Aiden McSavenney, Lachlan Boland. Students were split into groups during the first half of the day, with all groups undergoing fun warmup sessions including catching, hitting and running. The sessions were followed by Tee-ball and Slow-pitch games for the Primary School and High School students respectively. A quick and enjoyable lunch soon followed before the students headed over to Diamond 1 for a Grand Final game featuring some of their best softballers, with Doonside High School eventually going on to win the well-contested game.

Speaking of Sport For All's 32-year-long relationship with Softball NSW, Greg Brown pointed out how Softball was a perfect sport for inclusion, especially because of the easily modifiable nature of the sport which also ensures that everyone participating always has a go.

The overall excitement and proactive involvement of all students and teachers present on the day reflected Greg's thoughts, with plenty of smiles, celebrations and emotions running high among everyone all day. Inclusion Day 2022 at Softball NSW also ended up being a fantastic reminder of how softball would always be everyone's game.
