COACHING APPOINTMENT: NSW UNDER 14 BOYS
Published Fri 30 Jul 2021
Neil Taimalie, Eddie Cashen and Steven Albee have been appointed as head coaches of the NSW Under 14 Boys' team for 2022 & 2023. They share their insights on coaching as well as playing at this level.
What does it mean to you to be appointed as the Head Coach of the NSW Under 14 Boys' team?
Neil Taimalie: It's an age group that I am passionate about - it demands trust, respect and hard work from the coaching staff and I. We are the first port of call for these athletes. Their experiences of highs and lows are on me, and I welcome the challenge.
Eddie Cashen: I am excited and honoured to be the head coach of the U14 boys head coach.
Steven Albee: It's an honour and privilege to be given an opportunity to teach the future generation about the game - one that has been a huge part of my life, since playing club t-ball all the way to representing NSW and Australia.
What excited you most about your appointment?
Neil Taimalie: I get to be a role model for my athletes in my everyday life. I can share my knowledge of the sport to like-minded individuals, players and officials. The opportunity to compete for a National Regional Championship is an added bonus.
Eddie Cashen: I am excited to have an opportunity to work with the up-and-coming players and the other coaching staff to develop the next group of players.
Steven Albee: The ability to shape the future of Men's Softball - Preparing them with the appropriate tools to make them the best athletes they can be, to take them as far as they can imagine within the sport.
What should potential athletes expect upon entering the Under 14 Boys program?
Neil Taimalie: Trus the program, trust the processes, trust your coach! In the famous words of SCAR…”Be PREAAPARE”
Eddie Cashen: They should be ready to work hard and have a positive attitude towards improving their game.
Steven Albee: Potential athletes should expect to have their knowledge and ability pushed to their absolute limits. To thrive as teammates and athletes, but most importantly, to have the time of their lives. If you're not having fun, you're not enjoying softball.
What advice can you give to aspiring coaches who hope to coach at this level one day?
Neil Taimalie: Be yourself. Be consistent and honest. Be hard but be fair. Build and nurture relationships with athletes both on and off the diamond. Establish group rules and implement boundaries early in your campaign. Plan, evaluate, and execute!
Eddie Cashen: Always be willing to learn from other coaches. Take every opportunity that comes your way. Work hard and chase your coaching dreams.
Steven Albee: Don't be afraid to ask questions of any coach or player within the sport. You will never meet a softballer who won't give advice or a friendly hand when asked. You are going to meet plenty of coaches over your career so take something out of anything.
Softball NSW would like to congratulate Neil, Eddie and Steven on their appointments. We know they will do a fantastic job!
