COACHING APPOINTMENT: KATHY HORTON – NSW UNDER 23 WOMEN
Published Tue 13 Jul 2021
Kathy Horton has been appointed as Head Coach of the NSW Under 23 Women’s team for 2022 & 2023. She shares her insights on coaching as well as playing at this level.
What does it mean to you to be appointed as the Head Coach of the NSW Under 23 Women’s team?
This appointment offers me an opportunity to represent the number one State in Australia. In representing NSW I have the opportunity, in combination with talented staff and players, to apply and transfer the knowledge, skills, and values that have been developed over time. The appointment comes with intrinsic and extrinsic challenges and expectations. These are surpassed by the desire to achieve.
What excited you most about your appointment?
The 23’s pathway is a vital stepping stone in the development of our players. It provides vision for the U/18’s and shows what future development is required to be an Opens player. As a coach, it is satisfying to be part of the progressive development of our players.
What should potential athletes expect upon entering the Under 23 Women’s program?
The program is about providing a high-performance structure that has been drawn from best practices from within and outside of our sport. The players have the opportunity to take advantage of this structure, and not only become good softball players, but more importantly good athletes. The program is designed to improve movement competency by the enhancement of physical literacy skills. This in combination with the softball skills will enhance future performances.
What advice can you give to aspiring coaches who hope to coach at this level one day?
Take every opportunity that comes your way because you never know when there will be no more opportunities. There is always someone who knows more on an area than what you do so take the time to watch and listen. Have the ability to honestly and realistically self-reflect, and if you can work with a mentor.
Things aren’t always necessarily right or wrong – sometimes it’s just different. People can do things differently and that’s ok. Maintaining the status quo is actually going backwards – be progressive. Be cautious of doing things a certain way because that’s how it’s always been done. Steal ideas from other people (in and out of softball) and add your own spin on it.
Softball NSW would like to congratulate Kathy on her appointment. We know she will do a fantastic job.
