COACHING APPOINTMENT: ELIZA O’LEARY – NSW OVER 35 MEN

Published Tue 06 Jul 2021

Eliza O’Leary has been appointed as Head Coach of the NSW Over 35 Men’s team for 2022 & 2023. She shares her insights on coaching as well as playing at this level.

What does it mean to you to be appointed as the Head Coach of the NSW Over 35 Men’s team?

It is an honour once again to be appointed Head Coach of the NSW Over 35 Men’s Team for 2022/23. Due to Covid, we were unable to make the history we had intended for this team in 2021. However, not all was lost as it did present the opportunity for me to make myself familiar with and known to the players. I realised it wasn’t going to be an easy task, especially being the first team and coach at this age and level. I’m very grateful for that experience now as it became one that I will cherish always. Thanks to the inaugural NSW Over 35 Men’s team and officials.

What excited you most about your appointment?

What excites me most about my appointment as head coach of this team is knowing the caiabre, the quality of these athletes. It impresses me to think of the experience and such a wealth of knowledge these guys have amongst each other. The skill level is pretty impressive too, which is something I’m really excited about working with. Another reason I am keen to get started with this team is that I witnessed the competitive spark reignite and that’s something I will strive for again with this team.

What should potential athletes expect upon entering the Over 35 Men’s program?

For the potential athletes, The final team selected can expect approximately 16 weeks of training. The sessions, times and dates will vary accordingly after the Team has met and discussed this. The program will consist of fitness, defence/offense, batting, battery, skills development, personal and team goal setting plans. Injury management is something I would like to introduce into the program as it is not just imperative, it is crucial, considering the age group we are working with. I would like the team to expect 100% commitment and honesty from myself as I will expect no less from each Player.

What advice can you give to aspiring coaches who hope to coach at this level one day?

I won’t advise, but encourage all those aspiring coaches to follow through. Watch, listen & learn as much as you possibly can. Love what you do and stay true to yourself. Your teaching becomes easy when you master the art of sharing, as a coach that’s all your doing!

Softball NSW would like to congratulate Eliza on her appointment. We know she will do a fantastic job.
