Shining a Light on Autism Awareness in Softball: Umpire Shane Watson

Published Wed 02 Apr 2025

Today, April 2nd, marks World Autism Awareness Day, a global movement to increase understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals on the autism spectrum. As we recognise this day, we want to take a moment to spotlight Shane Watson, a dedicated Level 2 Softball Umpire from Georges River Softball Association. Shane is currently working towards his Level 3 accreditation, aiming to achieve this milestone in 2025.

Shane’s story is a reminder that softball is for everyone. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion means ensuring that every umpire, player, coach, and volunteer, regardless of their background or abilities, feels supported and valued. “I’m proud of my disability and to be part of this sport and able to umpire,” Shane states.

“It’s great that we’re able to continue to support the diverse members of our community. Having worked with Shane on the diamond and having many conversations with him, I’m proud to support him on his journey to be a part of our softball community, especially our blue family.” Krissi Travers, Softball NSW Director of Umpiring.

As we celebrate World Autism Awareness Day and enter Autism Awareness Month, let’s continue to foster an environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate, grow, and succeed in softball. Whether it’s through better understanding, advocacy, or simply embracing and celebrating the differences that make us unique, we all have a role to play.

To Shane and to all members of our softball family who face challenges and continue to show up, we see you, we support you, and we are proud to have you on this journey with us.
