The Georges River Open Men’s Team have taken out the 2016 State Championship defeating Macarthur 8 – 6 in the final.
The Championship was played in Newcastle for the first time and the weather was perfect. With 2 out of the 3 fields open fields it made for some big hitting Softball and exciting catches in the outfield. The standard of play was very high and the way in which the games were played was exceptional.
After the rounds Macarthur were undefeated and Georges River were second, only dropping one game and that was to Macarthur 5 – 1, these 2 teams headed into the final.
Georges River scored early then Macarthur hit back with 2 runs to lead the game up until the 6th innings when the River Boys scored 3 runs courtesy of a home run each by Jayden Lach and Mitchell Brownlow then in the 7th a 3 run home run to Lochie Hay and some team hitting too the lead out to 8 – 2 going into the bottom of the 7th. 3 home runs to Harri Peters, Blake Bell and James Todhunter in the bottom of the 7th was not enough to force an extra innings or a win with the score finishing at 8 – 6 in Rivers way.
