Manly Eagles and Tropics take out State League

After weeks of rain, the top four finally got back on the diamond for the finals on Sunday with the Manly Eagles and Tropics claiming convincing wins in their respective grand finals.

The Manly Eagles came to play on Sunday, thumping the minor premier Northern Storm 5-0 to move straight into the final, while the Panthers eliminated the defending champion Sharks with a 6-3 win.

The Storm and Panthers played out an entertaining preliminary final with a 3-2 victory to the Northern Storm.

While this pitted the Storm and Eagles against each other. While it was a close start with the Storm hitting back after Manly scored the first two runs of the game, the Eagles ran away with the result and the State League title with an 8-1 win.

The award winners were:

  • Rookie of the tournament: Mia Gilmore (Northern Storm)
  • Pitcher of the tournament: Tarni Stepto (Manly Eagles)
  • Batter of the tournament: Lara Seto (Manly Eagles)
  • MVP: Mia Gilmore (Northern Storm)

In the men’s side of the draw, Tropics took a 5-2 semi-final win to move straight into the final against Dolphins, while United stormed to a 12-4 win over Mounties.

It was a stunning result and set up a huge semi-final. United went hard at the Dolphins but the minor premiers won 4-3 in a terrific match.

It set up another final between the top two teams but Tropics were the better for the rest, winning 10-3 over the defending champion Dolphins. It wasn’t a certain win from the beginning however, with the sides trading early blows and were locked at 4-3 midway through the game.

  • Batter of the tournament: Shaun Bostock (Tropics)
