Hornsby take out Under-19 Women’s State Championships

Hornsby has continued its great recent record in the Under-19 Women’s State Championship with a commanding win in the tournament.

It’s the fourth time Hornsby have claimed the under-19s state championship title since 2008 and its second title in three years.

It was a wildly competitive weekend close games throughout. Hornsby’s Jorja Barrett, who was co-captain alongside Callista Gatt, said it was a great weekend.

“Every game was hard fought,” she said. “There were no easy games  – every team was great. The level of softball played across the weekend was just amazing.”

With 10 teams in 2018 and the addition of Campbelltown, Newcastle and Wagga Wagga, the competition was split into two pools.

Pool A saw Hornsby top the table on runs against after Macarthur suffered a last round 10-1 loss to Manly, pushing out Macarthur’s runs against to 12, while Hornsby conceded just nine. Cumberland Nepean scraped into third on even points with Manly Warringah, with Manly and Newcastle playing for positions.

Pool B was dominated by Sutherland, running through the early rounds undefeated to book its place in the semi-finals. Penrith City and defending champions North Shore rounded out the top three while Wagga Wagga and Campbelltown also performed well at the representative level.

The cross-over finals saw Penrith play Cumberland Nepean and Macarthur face North Shore. Cumberland Nepean overcame Penrith City in a close 5-3 result to move through to the semi finals against Hornsby, and North Shore edged past North Shore 2-0, setting up a match against Sutherland for a place in the grand final.

Hornsby were at their dominant best in the semi-final with an 8-1 win over Cumberland Nepean, while Sutherland had a 6-4 win over North Shore.

Coming into the final, Hornsby continued its march to the title with a 7-1 win, inflicting Sutherland it’s only loss of the tournament.
