The NSW Firestars are straight through to the open women’s Gilley’s Shield grand final following a 2-0 win over the Queensland Heat in the semi-final.
The Firestars earlier finished second at the end of the round robin, coming up against the top-ranked Queensland side in the semi-finals.
NSW started early with a run in the first innings when Taylah Tsitsikronis’ single brought Stacey Porter home. It was a tight game with a wild pitch leading to the second run. Firestars pitcher Kaia Parnaby pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts and just four hits. The Firestars are the defending champions in the Gilley’s Shield, winning last years’ grand final 8-0 against Queensland in Blacktown.
The NSW and Queensland had split the wins in earlier rounds of the tournament with NSW inflicting Queensland’s only previous loss of the tournament.
It was a great start to the tournament from NSW, winning the first seven matches before losing two of their last three round robin games with a 5-2 loss to Queensland and 7-1 loss to Western Australia. However, the loss to Western Australia pushed NSW to second on the ladder after the preliminary rounds.
The grand final starts 9.30pm AEST as the Firestars look for a 21st national championship.
