Father’s Day fightbacks as State League gets interesting

The third weekend of the 2018 State League season has seen upsets and close games in another huge day of action.

The previously unbeaten men’s leaders Dolphins and women’s leaders Manly Eagles tasted defeat at the hands of the second placed Tropics and Northern Storm respectively.

The losses bring the leaders back to the pack and set up an intriguing second half of the season. It was a slightly less high scoring day on Sunday with another 158 runs scored across the 14 games – taking the tally past 500 runs in the first three weekends of action.

Week 4 will be a shortened weekend following the Softball NSW AGM, starting at 2.30pm at Blacktown International Sportspark on Sunday September 9.

Women’s

The women’s ladder order has stayed the same from last week but there were several huge results.

The biggest was the Manly Eagles’ first loss of the year with the second-placed Northern Storm cutting the Eagles ladder lead back to three points with a game in hand. The 6-3 win tightens up the top of the ladder ahead of AGM weekend and before a three week break for both the boys and girls Under-15s State Championships and the Open Women’s State Championship.

The Eagles were in fine form in the other two games with a 19-0 win over Hills and 9-1 defeat of Sharks. Sharks had a mixed day with a one-run win over Hills and one-run loss against Panthers.

Northern Storm won a pair of victories with a 7-1 win over Panthers and the victory over Eagles.

Men’s

An early blip in week one of the season has all but been erased for Tropics, who have strung together four straight wins to rise to second. A pair of losses in the opening weekend saw the team down the wrong end of the ladder but the side has quickly risen on the back of great performances over the last two weeks – including becoming the highest scoring team in the competition after six games.

Tropics’ form was capped off this weekend as it inflicted a 9-4 on Dolphins, the ladder leaders’ first loss of the season. Tropics also accounted for Thurabredz – Rua, while Dolphins bounced back with a big win over Thurabredz -Tahi.

Tahi dropped to third on the ladder after a close 7-6 win over Demons. United rocketed into fourth spot with two big wins over Rua and Mounties. With four points separating second and seventh, next weekend’s shorten weekend will be an exciting end to the first round of the season before the teams’ second match against each other.
